What a good marketer needs

A good marketer is able to develop the company’s vision to be translated to the market place – to retain the quickest top-of-mind recall and to plan excellent long term marketing ideas.

Any marketing professional will inevitably encounter various challenges along the way. Whether you’re a mid or senior level marketing maestro, there are certain things that you should keep in mind while making your way to the top.

Some form of training

Most marketers learn while on the job, but basic concepts form the foundation of a great marketer. The individual has to have a good understanding of concepts such as target market, segmentation, positioning as well as the 4 Ps of marketing: product, placement, price and promotion.

Good communicators

Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for marketers. A marketing professional needs to liaise with stakeholders, colleagues and the public to convey a positive, strong message clearly.

Creativity

A good marketer can think out of a box and come up with new ideas that others can’t. Particularly for marketers who work closely with advertising agencies, they will also require some form of creative flair to help agencies with a proper brief. Whereas marketers working in market research should ideally have strong analytical abilities.

To have a vision

A great marketer looks beyond today’s to-do list and can envision where this brand will be in five years’ time, and beyond. This marketing professional doesn’t just roll out day-to-day activities for their own sake, but as part of a greater plan to help differentiate from the masses; to make it outstanding in the market.

Able to multi-task

A marketer has to manage multiple projects, such as a website or new brand identity – various marketing projects that may have really tight deadlines. Therefore the ability to multi-task, prioritise and remain calm under pressure are paramount.

To be a people person

A good marketer should be able to communicate in a very straightforward and succinct manner, in order to avoid confusion and miss deadlines. People skills are so important for most marketers. A typical marketer spends 90% of the time collaborating with graphic and web designers, market researchers, event coordinators and other service providers. So this marketing professional has to be able to manage each person effectively to bring the project to fruition.
