Building a long-term career in recruitment

Victoria Stanton

Victoria Stanton joined Robert Walters with over five years’ experience in recruitment with another global firm. She found that Robert Walters was a company where she could develop professionally and build a long-term career in recruitment.

A different working culture

“Recruitment is always the same industry wherever you work, but the key difference at Robert Walters is a culture of collaboration and teamwork. The bonus structure the company uses means that the potential to earn very healthy sums is available, but you can do so working closely with colleagues to pull towards a common goal.

You still face the same challenges that are part and parcel of recruitment but you do so in an environment where you feel supported.

Training and development is another big part of the culture at Robert Walters. In some agencies, I felt that training was more of a formality, but in my role my training is tailored to me, with one to one sessions to help me achieve the professional development I want to take my career in the direction I want.”

A long-term approach

“In terms of my day-to-day work, I have found that a long-term view of recruitment is actively encouraged.

We are still a target driven business with ambitious staff, but there is more freedom to take a strategic approach to business development and relationship building to help grow the business over the long term.

Ultimately, I feel like I’m given more responsibility to develop my team and use my judgement to determine how to best achieve our goals as a business. I have the opportunity to discuss the goals and targets that I set for my team with my director and play an active role in shaping our strategy.”

Collaboration across front and back office

“In addition to creating a collaborative atmosphere among our consultants, Robert Walters also encourages a strong degree of interaction between frontline staff and our support teams. We are regularly and actively involved with our marketing team for example, taking advantage of their expertise to develop thought leadership research and events to attract new clients and candidates.

This less siloed approach means that we can explore new avenues for growing our business and take full advantage of the skills our colleagues possess.

I am confident that my career with Robert Walters will give me the opportunity to realise my ambitions and achieve real long-term professional development.”
