Quality officer
A leading global procurement team is seeking a dedicated Quality Officer to join their Hong Kong-based operations, supporting the wider Asia region. This pivotal role offers you the opportunity to make a significant impact on the integrity and reliability of steel and hi-chrome products sourced from specialty suppliers across Asia.
What you'll do:
As a Quality Officer based in Hong Kong within a global procurement function, you will play a central role in upholding the highest standards of product integrity for steel and hi-chrome materials sourced from leading Asian suppliers. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve managing complex quality assurance systems that underpin operational excellence across multiple business units. You will coordinate supplier audits throughout Asia—travelling frequently to locations such as China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Korea—to verify compliance with stringent specifications. By developing robust documentation frameworks for service level agreements and key performance indicators, you will ensure that all processes are transparent and measurable. Your ability to provide technical guidance on root cause analysis will be essential when addressing non-conformances or supporting customer complaint investigations. Success in this role requires building strong rapport with both internal teams and external partners while continuously driving improvements in quality management practices.
- Maintain and enhance a comprehensive quality management system that aligns with ISO 9001 standards or is capable of achieving compliance.
- Audit global specialty steel suppliers and foundries across Asia to ensure adherence to strict quality control processes and Molycop’s specific requirements.
- Coordinate product testing activities and manage certification processes for steel, hi-chrome, and other materials to guarantee compliance with defined specifications.
- Support customer complaint enquiries by investigating non-conformances and verifying product conformance through systematic root cause analysis.
- Develop and deploy supplier auditing systems tailored for steel and hi-chrome procurement, ensuring value chain alignment with both internal business units and external customers.
- Provide technical expertise to the global procurement team regarding specification development, process control, and ongoing improvements in quality assurance management.
- Administer documentation for quality assurance plans, service level agreements, key performance indicators, procedures, work instructions, and test regimes.
- Report regularly to senior leadership including the Global Procurement President and Group Metallurgist on supplier performance metrics and audit outcomes.
- Collaborate with business unit lead teams to clarify technical content within quality standards and contribute to new supplier projects aimed at maximising value for customers.
- Establish call plans and audit schedules for suppliers while modelling core organisational values of safety, customer focus, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
What you bring:
To excel as a Quality Officer within this global procurement environment, you will bring proven expertise in managing complex quality assurance systems tailored for industrial materials such as steel or hi-chrome alloys. Your background should include hands-on experience within the steel sector or related foundry industries where you have developed robust programmes that meet international standards like ISO 9001. Your analytical skills—supported by formal training in root cause analysis—will enable you to address non-conformances efficiently while supporting customer complaint investigations. Practical knowledge of non-destructive testing methods will further strengthen your ability to verify product integrity during audits. Effective communication skills in both Chinese and English are crucial given the multicultural nature of supplier interactions across Asia. Your willingness to travel extensively demonstrates your commitment to building strong relationships with partners while ensuring consistent application of best practices throughout the supply chain.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in engineering, metallurgy or quality management is required for this position.
- Demonstrated experience managing quality systems within the steel industry or related foundry environments is essential.
- Proven practitioner qualifications in root cause analysis (certificates or equivalent courses) are necessary for effective problem resolution.
- Experience developing and deploying comprehensive quality assurance programmes for industrial materials is highly desirable.
- Certification in non-destructive testing or equivalent practical experience is expected for this role.
- Familiarity with third-party testing houses or manufacturing operations provides valuable context for supplier auditing activities.
- Sound understanding of metal processing methodologies including steel manufacturing and alloy casting techniques is important.
- Above average proficiency in conducting root cause analysis ensures thorough investigation of non-conformances.
- Fluency in both Chinese and English is required to facilitate communication across diverse supplier networks.
- Willingness to travel frequently throughout Asia—including China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Korea—is vital for successful supplier engagement.
