From logistics to recruitment

Sharna joined Robert Walters as a recruitment consultant in 2015 after switching from a career in logistics. She now leads our project services division, specialising in IT, in our Sydney office.

We asked her why she made the switch to recruitment and how her previous industry experience has helped her progress in her recruitment career. 


What made Robert Walters the right choice for you?

I was struggling to see how I could further progress my career in logistics and, as someone who is goal-driven and ambitious, I felt that I needed a fresh challenge that would keep up with my ‘go-getter’ mentality. Robert Walters seemed to tick these boxes and I was particularly impressed by the company’s international programme and commitment to providing ongoing training. In addition, the prospect of autonomous work and uncapped earning potential really appealed to me.

When I first joined Robert Walters, I was determined to grow my desk and progress to a managerial position. The company’s meritocratic culture meant I was able to achieve both these goals in less than two years. For me, this is one of the best aspects of working at Robert Walters– if you’re willing to put in the effort, there are no limits to where you can take your career.

How did you successfully transfer your skills?

What I enjoy most about my role is the fact that I have a lot of autonomy, I am my own boss. It’s like managing my own business.

My previous role in logistics was client facing so many aspects, such as relationship building and stakeholder management, were similar to what I do now as a recruiter. Having this previous experience meant I found it quite easy to transition into recruitment. 

How did Robert Walters help you transition into your new role?

Robert Walters has an intensive six-week training academy which equips consultants with all of the tools needed to succeed in the role. Following the training academy, I shadowed some of the best role models across the organisation which inspired me to excel to the next level. There is also continuous development and support.

Robert Walters has a proven record of converting a rookie into a successful consultant. I’m a prime example of someone who has achieved rapid progression as a result of the great mentoring and training I’ve received.

What’s a typical day like for you?

Every day is different and full of surprises which is something I love about my role. I get to network and liaise with key stakeholders at top technology firms and help candidates get the job they’ve always wanted through career coaching and interview preparation. Part of my role also involves business development and supporting the team through training and mentoring.

What do you love most about your role?

I thrive on the level of trust, autonomy and sense of reward you receive at Robert Walters. Most importantly, I love coming into work for the social aspect and the team spirit which is driven by the shared commission model.

What skills do you need to be successful in recruitment?

Having a positive attitude and resilience are crucial to succeeding in recruitment; while it can be a very rewarding career, it’s a fast-paced environment which means you have to be able to adapt quickly. If you’re goal-oriented and driven, you are well placed to succeed in recruitment.
